Personal
Development
Builds a Better You,
Builds a Better Business
Personal Development in a home base business is more than
business skills, it is also personal skills. The more you
become, the more your business becomes.
Personal
Skills
You ARE the Business.
The home based business is often a one person
operation, sometimes a family affair. That means that the
success or failure of the business will depend upon you. Your
attitudes, habits, principles, vision and business skills all
go into playing a major role.
Your personal development will determine the future success of
your home based business. You will need to grow to meet the new
challenges that will continually confront you.
Personal development challenges you to be your best. "You
cannot mandate productivity; you must provide the tools to let
people become their best." -Steve Jobs, 1988
Starting point
Determining what your strengths are. What is it that you like
to do and are good at? Look at your skills, habits, attitudes.
You want to build your business around those strengths. Next
what are your weak points? Those are areas that you will need
to learn, delegate or job out.
A positive can do attitude is critical to your personal
development! If you do not believe in yourself, how can you
expect others to? Cultivate the attitude of seeing the glass as
half full, rather than as half empty. The Law of Attraction
comes into play here. Positive attracts positive, negative
repels. People like to be around positive people. They are
exciting and enthusiastic. They are the ones that are
doing.
Have a vision of where you are going and how it will be helping
others. A compelling vision will attract followers.
Be sure to have written goals. Once written they compel you
forward. It becomes your compass to guide you on the correct
course. You want your goals to cover all areas of your life:
Physical, Mental, Spiritual, Financial, Family and Social. That
will give you a balanced life.
Personal development challenges you to think forward. "Greater
than the tread of mighty armies is an idea whose time has
come." -Victor Hugo, 1874

Business
Skills
Understanding What Makes the
Business Work
Business skills round out your personal development. You need
to develope at least an understanding, if not mastery in
certain key elements of building your business.
You should have a basic understanding of accounting even if you
have someone else keeping your books. Accounting is the score
card for your business. Knowing how to read a Profit and Loss
statement and the Balance Sheet will let you understand how
strong your business is and in what direction it is moving. An
understanding of expenses and income will allow you to better
plan.
Marketing is another critical skill for all entrepreneurs. The
business cannot grow if no one knows it is there. It is vital
that the business is promoted well in traditional circles as
well as on the Internet.
Time spent reading and taking courses on personal development
and business skills will pay dividends many times over. The
wise man spends time first sharpening the Axe before trying to
fell the tree. The foolish one works five times harder with a
dull Axe and accomplishes little.
Path to Personal Development
Becoming the best you can be Is a life long journey.
You will want to set up an ongoing personal development
program. It is the daily self-improvment that will give
you the slight edge.
Your program should consist of reading motivational
materials, developing new personal and business skills,
and expanding your expertise in
your industry.
You should attend seminars and conferences. They expand
your knowledge and they also provide you the opportunity
to network with other like minded individuals.
Build a library of books, tapes and videos that you can
refer back to. Subscibe to magazines like
Success Magazine, the best magazine
on success skills.
